Learned Societies: By Their Works Shall Ye Know Them - Open Access ...
1 Apr 2007 by (Stevan Harnad)
SUMMARY: The formula for distinguishing which of the scholarly and scientific societies are on the side of the angels will be simple to reckon. By Their Works Shall Ye Know Them: The societies that are Green on author self-archiving -- and are not lobbying against Green OA ... The DC Coalition: A Matter of Principle - Open Access Archivangelism
21 Feb 2007 by (Stevan Harnad)
(4) "Mandating self-archiving will destroy Learned Societies' other 'good works'": The research community was never consulted, and never agreed to subsidise Learned Societies' other 'good works' from researchers' own lost access and impact. Yes, the interests of learned-society publishers like ACM -- and indeed those of any refereed journal publisher -- are not more important than the interests of research, researchers, their institutions, their funders, ... But research interests are not well-served if we demonize even those publishers, like ACM, who are already on the side of the angels on OA, nor if we gratuitously over-reach instead of grasping what's already within reach. .... 23 Oct 2007 by (Stevan Harnad)
ACS is the Learned Society with the biggest and most remunerative publishing operation. With Chemical Abstracts they make a lot more money than the American Physical Society (APS), which was the very first of the Green publishers, and which set ... In this regard, AAAS (Green) is fully on the side of the Angels, whereas Nature (Pale-Green) is not. The only two differences between AAAS and Nature are that (1) AAAS is still (nominally) supporting the "Ingelfinger Rule" on ...
